And so it begins...
Issue #1
Hi guys,
Welcome to the very first issue of my newsletter! 🍾
I was inspired this year by Ali Abdaal to finally get my YouTube channel up and running, something I have thought about for a very long time but never had the motivation (courage?) to actually do.
Many years ago I had a lot of fun and success writing tutorials for Audiotuts, and I still hear from readers who have found those articles helpful.
My hope for the YouTube channel is that I can achieve the same goal: to help people understand the “why” behind composition, orchestration, harmony, etc. so that they can use that knowledge to write better music and have a more positive and productive experience doing it!
This newsletter will not be focused specifically only on writing music, but on the many different things I am interested in. This includes music, movies, productivity, YouTube, writing, reading, learning, studying (right now that’s particularly studying Japanese), Nintendo, etc. etc.
I have a pretty wide range of interests that I know won’t match with everyone, but I do hope there will always be something to be found that is useful, interesting, or at least amusing.
So thank you to Ali Abdaal for the YouTube inspiration, and also thank you to Yath Prem for inspiring me to take it a step even further to start writing this newsletter.
I’ll see you next week!
Ryan
This Week’s Recommendations
Course - Video Editing with Final Cut Pro X - From Beginner to YouTuber.
This course is full of useful information and taught me everything I needed to know to get up and running with Final Cut Pro X so that I could produce high quality videos for my YouTube channel. I’m feeling pretty good about how the production quality is improving, although my delivery and ability to act natural in front of the camera needs work!Video - How to make a GREAT Tutorial
An excellent overview of what works (and what doesn’t) when it comes to making online tutorials that are useful and people will actually want to watch.Book - Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling
Public storytelling is not something I have any intention of doing, but I still found this book fun to read and thoughtful. The part I found most interesting is his idea of finding those 5 second moments throughout your day that are the “real story” behind the anecdotes. For example the real story is not the trip you took to back to your hometown, but the 5 second moment when you realized how much you had changed since you were a kid.
New Gear 🎧
LG 34WN80C-B 34 inch 21:9 Curved UltraWide WQHD IPS Monitor
This monitor is awesome! For years I have been using two monitors and just dealt with that big black stripe down the middle of my view. Well no more! It’s amazing how much easier it is to edit audio when it’s spread out so widely.
